Capital CDC to be Honored at the Small Business Awards Luncheon in Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI – The U. S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Corpus Christi Branch Office announced today the winners of the 2015 Small Business Week Awards.  This year marks the 52nd annual proclamation of National Small Business Week, May 4-8, 2015.To recognize and salute the achievements of the awardees a Small Business Awards Luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13th, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will be hosted by Del Mar College’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC).  The event will be held at the Omni Corpus Christi Hotel, 900 N Shoreline Blvd, Corpus Christi, Texas. 

“It’s truly an excellent time to recognize the importance of small business ownership and to celebrate model entrepreneurs whose enterprises contribute to the commercial prosperity of the Lower Rio Grande Valley District which includes the Coastal Bend area,” Angela R. Burton, district director, Lower Rio Grande Valley District Office stated.

The District Small Business Person of the Year award is presented to William H. Heavin of Heavin & Associates Insurance Agency, Inc., Corpus Christi, Texas.  Heavin & Associates Insurance Agency is a full-service health insurance firm, serving businesses, individuals, families and municipalities in the Coastal Bend for the past 30 years.  As a recognized expert in the field of personal and business health insurance coverage, he is often sought out and featured by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, KIII-TV and KRIS-TV for his knowledge of the Affordable Care Act, and the impact of the Act on small business and employees of those businesses.  Actively involved in the success of the firm, he sees clients daily, teaches dozens of seminars on a variety of topics for business, and serves on panels relating to health care reform and health insurance education.   Having weathered many storms since its founding in 1985, it has only made the company stronger and more successful, determined to deliver the best service available in Texas.

Women in Business Champion of the Year: Lorena Parada-Valdés, The Language Bridge, LLC, Corpus Christi, Texas

SBDC Advisor of the Year: James Jones, Certified Business Advisor IV, Del Mar College-SBDC, Corpus Christi, Texas

SCORE Mentor of the Year: Ralph Coker, SCORE Corpus Christi, Texas

Furthermore financial lending partners 1st Community Bank, American Bank, N.A. and Capital Certified Development Corporation will also be recognized for their financial support of small businesses during the luncheon.

“For more than 20 years the SBA and the SBDC have partnered to create an ecosystem of small business growth in the Coastal Bend area,” Branch Manager Debbie Fernandez said.  “Many of our winners started with nothing more than a dream and a strong desire to succeed.  With guidance and/or technical assistance from the SBDC and with or without an SBA loan guarantee from our lending partners they now see the rewards of their hard work.  I am so very proud and happy for our winners,” Fernandez said.
