SBA Honors Top South Central Lenders

By Yolanda Garcia Olivarez, South Central Regional Administrator

Fiscal Year 2015 was an outstanding year for the South Central Region. Our stats show that we assisted nearly 6,900 borrowers with loans valued at $3.4 Billion.  Those numbers are up 20% and 23% respectively.  This success is not possible without the support of our lending community.

More than 400 lenders attended our annual Mid America Lender's Conference which was held in the Dallas/Fort Worth District, where Herbert Austin is the District Director. A very special thanks to the North Texas Association of Government Guaranteed Lenders (NTAGGL) team of Jim Kahler, Helma Gentry, Jana Rouble, Gregg Dunn and James Stokes, who worked tirelessly to host a successful and informative event.

This year, we were honored to hear keynote remarks from SBA Deputy Administrator Doug Kramer who presented updates on major SBA trends and initiatives.

Deputy Administrator Kramer began his remarks by sharing behind-the-scene activities that helped influence Congress to quickly raise the lending cap on 7(a) loans to the highest level ever, in late July.  These activities occurred because SBA was forced to suspend lending until the new Fiscal Year which began Oct. 1.  The Agency had reached its Fiscal 2015 loan guaranty program limit due to an unprecedented demand from America’s small business community. We needed an act of Congress to raise the loan limits.

"Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet worked the phones tirelessly with our congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle,” he said. “She did this during some very unusual hours while in Kenya with President Obama at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. We also stayed in close communication with NAGGL and many of our banking partners, as we had in the months prior.”

In the end, Congress approved a bill raising SBA’s lending authorization ceiling to $23.5 billion. Because of this, SBA has set another record in lending to America’s small businesses during fiscal year 2015.

SBA enjoys a close collaboration with NAGGL and this relationship served as an important force in this process, the Deputy Administrator emphasized.  “It was a reminder of how government can respond quickly and effectively."
