Top small business lenders in Austin

The Austin Business Journal lists of small business lenders highlights banks and certified development corporations according to the type of Small Business Administration loans made.

Each list is ranked by dollar volume of loans approved during the SBA’s fiscal year.

Although the SBA 7(a) and SBA 504 lists feature many of the same lenders as in previous years, the amount of loans made by these list makers can vary greatly from one year to the next. It is not uncommon for lenders that have never been ranked to debut near the top of the list, and one cannot assume the large national banks will always take the number one spot.

In 2011, the 7(a) and 504 lists represented a total of nearly $177 million in loans for the Austin area compared to a total of nearly $228 million in loans on the 2012 lists. The number one bank lender in 2011 had almost $22 million in approved loans compared to the top lender in 2012 with $36 million in approved loans. Capital CDC took the top spot as a CDC lender both years with $49 million in loans in 2011 and $43 million in loans during 2012.

Credit unions, although not new to the list, appear to be increasing their presence. Looking back to 2008, University FCU regularly appears on both lists. Amplify CU and Randolph-Brooks FCU have been mainstays as 7(a) lenders. Newcomers this year include Austin Telco FCU 0n the 504 list and Velocity CU on the 7(a) list.
